Visiting a Site Before you Start Working in Construction

Site visits are an important part of choosing whether or not construction is the right industry for you. Visiting a functioning construction project or design office allows you to develop a greater understanding of how you will fit in on a typical construction site and how the information that you have learnt, either through your education or your experience in other career fields is put into practice.

A typical site visit will involve a presentation from the site team, a safety briefing and a tour of the project. It will give you hands on experience of a construction site and exposure to the technical language used – and also the winter weather!

The visits also encourages you to learn about project management practice related to health and safety, environmental issues and logistics management as well as giving you the opportunity to speak to experienced in the field you are interesting in working in. These workers can engage with you in an honest and open discussion about the practical elements of working on a construction site.

The importance of these visits is essentially to expose yourself to the practical side of working in construction. Talking and engaging with experienced workers and seeing first hand the intricacy of working on a construction site. Taking away from this a well informed and first hand understanding of what it would be like to be part of this environment and whether you feel you could assimilate into a similar role.
